The Sims 4 is way more stable a game than 3. Sims 4 has more options to create a unique looking sim, less clothing options, but more genetics options. Sims 3 has far more Supernatural Sim species to play (Like Genies, fairy's and Werewolves) The Sims 4 just has Expansions, Game Packs, Stuff Packs and Kits. Get Together, one of the earliest Expansion Packs released, offers the ability to form groups, go to nightclubs, and not much else. While the world of Windenburg is a beautiful one, it doesn't justify the $40 price tag on its own. Future expansion packs for The Sims 4 have put in much more content than Get Together appears to offer.
There isn't much content compared to 3. Although it is fun to go play it in short bursts occasionally, maybe a couple of hours per month. Sims 3 is so open compared to 2 and it feels like getting out of a tiny cramped car after a 12 hour road trip and stretching your legs. Basically, 3 has more potential and 2 is just about nostalgia.

Today, one can buy an expansion pack for around $5, or the entire series for approximately $20. In comparison, Sims 4 expansions cost anywhere from $40 to $55.
