Give up on soldiers that are high tier. Higher tier troops are super expensive for not all that much gain. In early game you could farm bandits with a lot of tier 2-3 archers and a few tier 2-3 meat shields. Some people don't do battles altogether and just have a full team of recruits/peasants to save up money.
